Kanchenjunga (8598 m) looks higher than Mt. Everest, owing to the curvature of the Earth, as it is several miles closer than Everest.

On the way to Darjeeling from Siliguri by the famous Toy Train journey passes through the Batasia Loop (A Windy Place) and the War Memorial. Batasia Loop is a railway loop in Darjeeling of West Bengal. Situated below the Ghoom station, it is one of the mesmerizing places to visit in Darjeeling.

Batasia Loop was built in 1919 to make the climb of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway easier. Here, the toy train makes a spiral turn, passing through a tunnel and around a hilltop. After Ghoom, the highest railway station, the train goes down a steep slope as it heads towards Darjeeling.

Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, dedicated it to Smt. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is the largest high-altitude zoo situated on 7000ft above the sea level in our country.

Mirik :

Mirik is a beautiful tourist spot in the hills of Darjeeling district, West Bengal. Located 1,767 meters above sea level, it enjoys pleasant weather all year. How to reach darjeeling :

By Air

Bagdogra, 90 K.M. The nearest airport to Darjeeling (via NH 110) has flights from major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahat

By Rail

Apart from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station (88 K.M. from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station) the two closest railway stations are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. These railway stations have direct railway connections with Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, and other major cities of India.

By Road

The major access to Darjeeling by road is via Siliguri, 77 K.M. (via NH 55), which is connected to all the major cities of India. Bus service is available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand, Siliguri. Smaller vehicles are also available on seat-sharing/ hire from airport, railway station, motor syndicates / police motor stand. Facility of Pre-paid taxi stand from NJP Railway station & Bagdogra airport can also be availed. The four routes that one can opt from Siliguri to reach Darjeeling are:

  • Tindharia – Kurseong route
  • Dudhiya – Mirik route
  • Rohini route
